Cobweb Orchestra wins Gramophone Award

The Cobweb OrchestraThe Cobweb Orchestra has won the Gramophone Music in the Community Award 2011.

The open-access community orchestra based in Yorkshire and the North East, which has already won the 2010 Epic Award for its inspired flash mob performance of Ravel’s Bolero, won the public vote via an online poll on The Times website. The orchestra was one of three Making Music member groups in the running for the award, which recognises an amateur orchestra that has changed lives through music.

The Cobweb Orchestra was created with the express idea of getting people to dust the cobwebs off their instruments and turn back to music-making. They cover everything from Baroque to new music (including its members’ own experiments) and musicians of all abilities. They welcome players of all standards to their weekly meetings at eight venues between the Scottish Borders and North Yorkshire
